Tree Removal

Tree Removal in Canberra

Safe, complete removal of dead, hazardous or unwanted trees — and we tell you up front if the ACT needs to approve it.

When a Canberra tree has to come down

Not every tree can be saved. A river red gum dropping major deadwood over a Chapman carport, a radiata pine leaning after a Belconnen windstorm, or a drought-stressed ornamental pear splitting at the union in Forrest can all reach the point where removal is the safest option. Tree Loppers Canberra connects you with insured, certified ACT arborists who remove dead, dangerous and unwanted trees cleanly — and who know when the ACT Government has to sign off first.

We arrange tree removal right across the capital, from the established eucalypt streets of Ainslie and Yarralumla to the newer Molonglo and Gungahlin estates. One call to (02) 6105 9285 starts an obligation-free on-site assessment.

Check the rules first — it matters in the ACT

Canberra is one of the most tree-protective jurisdictions in the country. Tree removal here is governed by the Urban Forest Act 2023 (which replaced the Tree Protection Act 2005). A tree on your block is protected if any of these apply:

  • It is 8 metres or more tall.
  • Its canopy is 8 metres or more wide.
  • Its trunk circumference is 1 metre or more, measured 1.4 metres above the ground.
  • It is listed on the ACT Tree Register.

To remove a protected tree you must lodge an approved tree activity application with City Services. The Conservator can approve removal where a tree is in decline, poses an unacceptable safety risk, is causing substantial damage to a building or service, or is simply the wrong tree for the spot. Removing a protected tree without approval can bring penalties of up to $80,000 for an individual and far higher for companies. The arborists we connect you with assess whether your tree clears these thresholds before anyone picks up a saw — so you stay on the right side of the law.

How a removal is done safely

Most Canberra blocks are tight, with houses, fences, sheds and overhead lines close by. Felling a whole tree in one drop is rarely an option, so crews typically:

  1. Assess the species, lean, defects and drop zone — and confirm protected status.
  2. Section-dismantle the canopy, roping limbs down piece by piece over sensitive targets.
  3. Take down the trunk in controlled sections, or directionally fell where there is a clear, safe drop zone.
  4. Process and clear the material, then grind or remove the stump if you want the ground back.

Where a tree has a clear drop zone, tree felling may be the faster, more cost-effective approach; if you only need the ground reinstated afterwards, stump grinding finishes the job below the surface.

The trees we see come down most in Canberra

Eucalypts dominate the city's urban forest — many planted from the 1950s to the 1980s and now ageing into a hotter, drier climate, which drives deadwood and limb failure. Alongside them, ornamental and Manchurian pears that struggle in Canberra's drought conditions, radiata and other pines, and storm-split conifers are common removal candidates. After the January 2020 hailstorm — which generated around 2,100 calls for help across Belconnen, Acton and the inner south — many of these trees came down right across the ACT.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property in Canberra?

You need ACT Government approval if the tree is 'protected'. Under the Urban Forest Act 2023 a tree on private land is protected when it is at least 8 metres tall, has a canopy at least 8 metres wide, has a trunk circumference of 1 metre or more measured 1.4 metres above the ground, or is listed on the ACT Tree Register. Removing a protected tree requires an approved tree activity application lodged with City Services. Smaller, non-protected trees can usually be removed without approval.

How much does tree removal cost in Canberra?

Price depends on the species, height, access and proximity to buildings or power lines — a small ornamental pear in an open yard is a very different job to a 20-metre eucalypt overhanging a roof in the inner north. Because every block is different, the arborists we connect you with quote on site after assessing the tree, free of charge.

Will I have to plant replacement trees?

If a protected tree is approved for removal, the ACT canopy contribution rules generally require home owners to plant 2 new trees on the block for each one removed, or pay a contribution of $600 per tree not replanted. This supports Canberra's urban canopy. The crew can explain how this applies to your situation before work begins.
