Tree Felling

Tree Felling in Canberra

Directional felling where there's room to drop the whole tree — fast, clean and controlled by certified ACT crews.

When the drop zone makes felling the right call

Out on the larger blocks at Canberra's edges — the rural-residential pockets around Hall, Tharwa and the Murrumbidgee corridor, and the open paddocks past Tuggeranong — there is often room to bring a whole tree down in one controlled drop. That is where tree felling earns its place. Tree Loppers Canberra connects you with insured, certified ACT arborists who fell radiata pines, dead eucalypts and self-seeded scrub directionally, dropping the tree exactly where it is planned to land.

Felling is faster and less labour-intensive than piece-by-piece dismantling — but only when the site allows it. Where a clear drop zone exists, it is usually the most cost-effective way to get a tree on the ground. Call (02) 6105 9285 to have your block assessed.

Felling vs sectional dismantling — and why it matters here

Most of Canberra's established suburbs are too tight for straight felling. A tree dropped whole needs clear space roughly its own height in the fall direction, free of houses, sheds, fences and overhead lines. On a standard block in Curtin or Dickson, that space simply isn't there, so crews section-dismantle the canopy from the top down instead.

Directional felling comes into its own where there is room:

  • Open rural-residential blocks at the city fringe
  • Paddock trees and shelterbelts with clear ground around them
  • Plantation-style radiata pine stands being cleared
  • Dead or dangerous trees in parks and reserves with controlled access

The method itself relies on a precise sink (face) cut, a back cut, and a deliberate hinge of holding wood that steers the tree to the planned lay. It is skilled, dangerous work — exactly why it belongs with certified, insured operators rather than a DIY chainsaw.

Know the ACT rules before a tree comes down

Felling is removal, and Canberra's tree-protection regime is strict. The Urban Forest Act 2023 protects any tree on leased land that is 8 metres or taller, spreads a canopy 8 metres or wider, has a trunk circumference of 1 metre or more at 1.4 metres above ground, or is listed on the ACT Tree Register. Felling one of those without an approved tree activity application can bring penalties up to $80,000 for an individual, and the canopy contribution rules then ask for 2 replacement trees — or $600 each — per tree removed. The arborists we connect you with confirm protected status before any cut is planned.

What Canberra crews fell most

Canberra's urban forest is dominated by eucalypts, but the trees most often dropped by straight felling are radiata pines on open blocks and ageing, drought-stressed specimens with clear ground around them. After the January 2020 hailstorm shredded canopies from Belconnen to Acton, plenty of split and dying trees on larger blocks came down this way.

Rated 5.0 from 17 Google reviews, with 20+ years on Canberra trees and fully insured crews, the team covers the whole ACT — Gungahlin, Belconnen, Woden, Weston Creek, Tuggeranong and the inner districts.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between tree felling and tree removal?

Felling means cutting a tree at the base and bringing the whole thing down in one controlled direction. It is quicker and less labour-intensive than sectional dismantling, but it only works where there is a clear drop zone — typically open space roughly the full height of the tree, free of buildings, fences and power lines. On a tight inner-Canberra block a crew will usually section-dismantle instead. The arborists we connect you with choose the method that suits your site.

Do I need ACT approval to fell a tree on my block?

If the tree is 'protected' under the Urban Forest Act 2023, yes — felling counts as removal and needs an approved tree activity application from City Services. A tree is protected when it is at least 8 metres tall, has a canopy 8 metres or wider, has a trunk circumference of 1 metre or more at 1.4 metres up, or is on the ACT Tree Register. Felling a protected tree without approval can attract penalties up to $80,000 for an individual.

Can you fell a large eucalypt near my house?

A large gum close to a house is usually a case for sectional dismantling rather than straight felling, because there is rarely a safe full-height drop zone. Where there is genuine clearance — an open paddock, a rural block at the city fringe, or a wide rear yard — directional felling is the efficient choice. The crew assesses lean, defects and the drop zone on site before deciding.
